BSBDC - Partnering For Success
Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation
The BSBDC was established in 1980 as a joint venture between the Bermuda Government and three banks: Butterfield Bank, Bank of Bermuda and Bermuda Commercial Bank. Its key objective is to assist the development of a strong, well-managed and successful small business sector in Bermuda by providing existing and potential small business owners with a broad range of business advice and financial assistance.
In keeping with the BSBDC’s strategic plan to establish a Mentorship Programme for fledgling entrepreneurs, Partnering for Success (PFS) was developed as an adoption of the BYBT Model which is in global partnership with Youth Business International. The objective of both prgrammes, like PFS, is to help entrepreneurs and mentor them through the success of their business ventures. By adopting the BYBT model, BSBDC accomplishes two objectives, establishing a formal youth entrepreneurship programme and establishing a mentorship programme. The overall goal of the PFS initiative will seek to provide mentorship and professional business counseling to BSBDC clients and can potentially be rolled out to all entrepreneurs.

Partnering For Success Mentoring Program
Based on a review of the BYBT program it is apparent that one critical factor in the success of their program is business mentoring. Through the development of BSBDC”S PFS program, we seek to recruit experienced entrepreneurs, professionals or business leaders who are highly recommended by service clubs or other organizations and individuals. These entrepreneurs professionals and business leaders will volunteer their time, knowledge and experience to help guide, advise and encourage the entrepreneurs in the start – up phase of their business.
It has been realized through various surveys and from observation on the part of BYBT that entrepreneurs who have committed mentors perform better in attitude and aptitude than those who have none. This personal performance is critical to the success of the business.
Mentors are required to participate in workshops, meetings and training sessions and to submit monthly reports on the progress of their mentees to the PFS Coordinator. Since business mentors are all volunteers, no mentor is paid by the mentee for services rendered.
